My Project
Biodiversity of non-human primates in the Campo Ma’an National Park using camera traps
Background
The Campo Ma’an National Park (CMNP) in Cameroon was created in 2000 to encourage conservation. It protects over 2,500 km2 of tropical forests and includes a rich biodiversity with a panoply of plants and animals. However, different pressures (e.g. logging, hunting, loss of habitat) weaken populations of already endangered species of primates, like western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) or central chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes). Because human pressure does not occur equally within the CMNP, it is important to see how it will affect species’ richness of primates in different areas. It is also important to see if primates use different habitats or food resources to understand the divergence of species’ spatial distribution. These are the starting points for better conservation measures.
Field Work
The field work will take place in summer 2025. The study site is in the tropical forest of Campo-Ma’an National Park, in the southwestern region of Cameroon. I will study 3 or more areas in the National Park. I will conduct vegetation surveys and try to detect human presence. I will also deploy many camera traps in these areas. The images will then be analyzed to understand the different biodiversity patterns.
Objectives
The main goals of my research project are:
- Assess the current status of non-human primates’ biodiversity in the CMNP and update the understanding of the ecology of this taxonomic group
- Understand why species use divergent or similar habitats among the areas under study
- Estimate the impacts of human presence in the CMNP
